The SCSD is one year into a four year Federal grant to tackle high dropout rates and low high school graduation rates and contracts with Apter & O’Connor as the local evaluator. In recent years SCSD has introduced the major initiative Say Yes to Education and along with several other targeted existing interventions (e.g., The 9th Grade Learning Academy, Project Advance-SUPA, AVID, Project Lead the Way and Expeditionary Learning) have made improving rates of high school graduation a priority goal for the district and the entire community. This High School Initiative Grant (HSIG) incorporates all of these efforts and adds enhanced professional development opportunities for staff, Graduation Initiative Specialists to work directly with students and several additional research-based instructional strategies for students identified as currently out of school, at-risk of dropping out or not on track for graduation. Apter & O’Connor has been hired to conduct a formative and outcome evaluation. We will use data from the Basic Educational Data System (e-School), standardized test scores, attendance records, and disciplinary referral reports and will survey/interview students, parents, counselors and teachers. All of this data will be used to measure district progress on several specific indicators of support to students and improved achievement.
