Responding to the demands of funders, boards, clients and the community…

Dec 10 2013

Community organizations are accountable to diverse constituent groups.  Apter & O’Connor is providing consultation and assistance to a wide array of not-for-profit agencies to increase their ability to respond and thrive in the current challenging fiscal climate. Our capacity-building work with health, educational and human service agencies is taking several forms, depending on the needs and “life-cycle” stage of the organization.  We are building on over a decade of previous work particularly that with New York State Office of Children and Families (OCFS) and many county Children’s Prevention Service offices  as well as with Community Development Block Grant recipients.

We are excited to announce as part of this renewed emphasis on capacity building and organizational development that Cynthia O’Connor applied and was recently selected by the Gifford Foundation as an ADVANS (Advancing and Developing the Value & Assets of Non-Profits in Syracuse) consultant. As part of the ADVANS team, Cynthia has been trained and will receive ongoing support by Dr. Susan Kenny Stevens, Gifford’s lead consultant for the project and the author of Nonprofit Lifecycles Stage–Based Wisdom for Nonprofit Capacity.  This  organizational development framework assumes predictable needs, challenges, and strengths dependent on an agency’s life cycle—from start up to maturity— and intensively works with agency leadership teams to grow and fortify their infrastructure.

Cynthia along with Dianne Apter and associate Nancy Smith will also begin work this spring with the GetSET (Success in Extraordinary Times) initiative created by the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York. GetSET is another exciting capacity building project that will focus on health, behavioral health, and human services organizations.

Drawing on our own experiences along with the coaching and resources these models provide, the goal of A&O remains to strengthen organizational capabilities and facilitate reflective problem solving with our clients to assure high quality services.
